Extraen combustible de buque accidentado en islas Mauricio

El 25 de julio el buque petrolero japonés MV Wakashio se accidentó en la costa sureste de islas Mauricio.
El primer ministro de Mauricio, Pravind Jugnauth informó este miércoles, en rueda de prensa, que ha sido extraído la mayor parte del petróleo derramado por el carguero accidentado en las costas de esta isla africana.
Jugnauth declaró ante medios locales y extranjeros que "en el momento en que les hablo, casi todo el petróleo se ha extraído del barco". Solo quedan "166 toneladas métricas", agregó.
Por su parte, el asesor ambiental del Gobierno de Mauricio, Mokshanand Sunil advirtió este miércoles que "ahora, el siguiente paso será retirar esas 166 toneladas métricas de crudo".
Los vientos y las corrientes marinas han esparcido el combustible sobre una amplia zona de arrecifes de coral, afectando así la fauna originaria del suroeste del océano Índico.
Para la colección del combustible derramado, los Gobiernos de Francia y Japón han enviado expertos al lugar del desastre. Al mismo tiempo, la Organización Marítima Internacional (IMO, por sus siglas en inglés) también ha ofrecido ayuda técnica.
La IMO ha reportado que "aproximadamente 3.894 toneladas de petróleo bajo en azufre, 207 toneladas de diesel y 90 toneladas de aceite lubricante" se encontraban en las bodegas del buque accidentado.
Tras la crisis sanitaria generada por la Covid-19, Mauricio perdió el turismo internacional, del cual depende su economía. Antes del accidente del carguero se pensaba reactivar este rubro con la industria turística a nivel nacional, sin embargo, esto ahora es casi imposible, dijo por su parte la funcionaria Romina Tello.
El 25 de julio el buque petrolero japonés MV Wakashio, propiedad de Nagashiki Shipping, operado por la empresa Mitsui OSK Lines Ltd, después de un accidente marítimo quedó varado en la costa sureste de islas Mauricio.
