Un masivo asteroide potencialmente peligroso pasará cerca de nuestro planeta este viernes, 24 de julio, según lo indican los datos del centro de la NASA para estudios de objetos cercanos a la Tierra (CNEOS, por sus siglas en inglés), que se encarga de monitorear diferentes aproximaciones a la Tierra de rocas espaciales.

Denominado '2020 ND', el cuerpo celeste tiene entre 110 y 260 metros en diámetro, superando en tamaño a la famosa noria londinense London Eye, la más alta de Reino Unido y de toda Europa, de 120 metros de diámetro.

La roca espacial —que se desplaza a una velocidad de casi 49.000 kilómetros por hora— se aproximará a nuestro planeta a una distancia mínima de 0,037 unidades astronómicas (5,5 millones de kilómetros), lo que permite clasificar al 2020 ND como 'potencialmente peligroso'.

La agencia espacial estadounidense define de esta forma a aquellos asteroides que pueden acercarse al planeta siguiendo una trayectoria que puede resultar amenazante, "en especial todos aquellos con una distancia mínima de intersección de órbita (MOID) de 0,05 unidades astronómicas o menos, y una magnitud absoluta (H) de 22,0 o menor".
